Biography
Prof. Xiangen Hu is a Chinese-American psychologist and computer scientist. He is currently a Chair Professor of Learning Sciences and Technologies at the Department of Applied Social Sciences, and Director of the Institute for Higher Education Research and Development at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. He was a tenured professor in the Departments of Psychology, Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Computer Science at the University of Memphis for 30 years, and is now Professor Emeritus of Psychology at UofM. He also serves as Dean of the School of Psychology at Central China Normal University (visiting, since 2016). Prof. Hu received his B.S. and M.S. in Applied Mathematics from Huazhong University of Science and Technology in 1982 and 1985, and his M.A. in Social Science and Ph.D. in Cognitive Psychology from UC Irvine in 1991 and 1993. His research focuses on mathematical models of human cognition, research design and statistical analysis (especially general processing tree models for categorical data), AI for knowledge representation, computerized tutoring systems, and distributed learning technologies. As PI, he has managed projects with over $10 million in funding; as Co-PI, he has been involved in projects exceeding $30 million. He is a core developer of the AutoTutor intelligent tutoring system and one of the earliest proponents of the SCORM standard.
