Biography

Gerry Stahl is Professor Emeritus of Computing and Informatics at Drexel University, specializing in Computer-Supported Collaborative Learning (CSCL). He received his B.S. in Humanities and Science from MIT in 1967, a Ph.D. in Philosophy from Northwestern University in 1975, and a second Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Colorado Boulder in 1993. He joined Drexel University in 2002, was granted tenure in 2008, promoted to Full Professor in 2012, and retired as Professor Emeritus in 2014. He is the founding Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Computer-Supported Collaborative Learning (ijCSCL), an official journal of the International Society of the Learning Sciences, which published its first issue in 2006, and served in this role until 2016. He directed the Virtual Math Teams (VMT) research project at Drexel and the Math Forum. He has published 410 publications and presentations (1967-2025), including multiple monographs and extensive academic papers. His seminal work "Computer-supported collaborative learning: An historical perspective" (Cambridge Handbook) has over 3,400 citations, and "Group Cognition" (MIT Press) has over 2,300 citations. He served as Program Chair of CSCL 2002, Workshop Chair of CSCL 2003, and founding board member of the International Society of the Learning Sciences (ISLS).
