Walter Issamu Suemitsu received his B.Sc. in Electrical Engineering from the University of São Paulo (1975), M.Sc. in Electrical Engineering from COPPE, Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (1979), and Ph.D. (Dr.Ing.) in Electrical Engineering from the École National Supérieur d'Ingénieurs Électriciens de Grenoble, France (1986). He is currently Full Professor (Professor Titular) at both the Polytechnic School and COPPE, Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), and Director of the Núcleo Interdisciplinar para o Desenvolvimento Social (NIDES). He has experience in Electrical Engineering, with emphasis on Power Electronics and Drives, working mainly on electronic converters, electronic drive of electric machines, and applications of fuzzy control and neural networks in electric machine control. He currently also works on the application of electronic converters in generation systems using renewable energy sources.
